Page history last edited by mariufernandez 15 years, 3 months ago
For this Quiz we have to see a Video of Cameron Sinclair about Sustainable desig, them we must respond some questions, here are my answers!

1. What kind of problem(s) did Cameron want to solve? (1 pt.)

He want to solve humanitarian problems, like the housing fact to the people that need it the most, peoples who lost their homes because of natural disasters and the problem about the knowledge in relation to HIV, because some many people, especially girls are affected by this, and that is because they don’t have an space or institution who teach them about it.

2. How did he face these problems? (1 pt.)

He begun creating sites at internet like blogs, web page, where he can share his ideas and opinions to people who are interesting on it, them that people start to respond and get interesting on it, and later step by step was creating more pages, and with some help of national organizations where finding an alternative of design for some countries that need it.

3. Explain 4 of the architectural solutions presented by him (2 e/o = 8 pts.)

1. Transitional Homes. Its about emergency shelters next to the land of the residence, where they can re-build their home and have a place to stay while this, this project allow them to work on their homes on their own ways without any pressure.

2. Mobile medical centers.  In Africa people have to walk a lot of kilometres to get a medical assistant so, Sinclair said “why don’t we get the medical assistant to them? Creating this medical centre the doctors have a place to stay with all that they should need to attend the community, like a medical community, instead the people have to walk 10 or 15 kilometres to see them.
3. Sports or community centers.  Most of the 50% of the girls around 16 and 24 years are infected by HIV, and the main reason of this is because there isn’t knowledge of it. So they create sport centers where girls who are infected by the HIV can get medical assistance for that sickness, and at the same time can be training with a good sport like soccer, for this occasion the community choose one of their favourites project, allowing the community to participate and getting them on the process.
4. Resistance Houses for disasters. This time, they create houses thinking on developing and disasters like tsunamis and hurricanes, these structures can be very easily to ensemble, for these project the community where part of the design process, they get completely involved and not just adults, also the kids mapping where the community center should be, everybody collaborate on it.

4. What is the meaning of open-source architecture to house the world? (1 pt.)

Open resource architecture mean that designers, planners, architects, engineers, funders, and scientists must work together to get a better world, create a community to helps people to integrate resources, use the Sinclair ideas as a connector and get together to work on the humanitarian models, teach people about disasters and how to act on it, make simulations, make a data of the cultural and local characteristics respond issues of humanitarian crisis, use Open-source architecture like a data base, when we can show a project and test it before an other disaster pass, and if it works, this could be use for everybody who need it, something that represent his idea globally.

5. In your opinion, what is the most important message in this video? (1 pt.)

The most important thing is that we have to take conscience about what is happens around the world that is affecting us, and as an architect that we are next to be, take into consideration the problem of communities, and use the sustainable design not as an option, use it as a fact, study the needs of the community or the people that we are working on and make real a solution to them, and don’t leave that in the air.
As Cameron Sinclair said: “Went you invent it’s never a reality until it’s built, so it’s very important that if we are designing a change, we built that change”.
