Valencia, a gallery of modernism

When we study different movements along history, we can notice that they are different but, at the same time, involve things that make them similar, and that is our situation around nineteenth and the early twentieth century when modernist began.

Modernism is a movement that revolutionized different countries around the world, starting with Europe, and obviously Spain wasn’t an exception. The modernism in Valencia began with the construction of emblematic buildings following the style of this movement. For this composition I’m going to talk about some of the architects, buildings and their characteristics to show you more about how Art Nouveau is reflected in each one.

Most of the buildings of this style, have the particularity that you can read them in a horizontal way, and they use the rhythm at the facades to emphasize it, also their design are very symmetrical. Although the use of curves is very frequently in this constructions and you might think that they are not symmetrical, but in fact they are.

These constructions can show the past as a reinterpretation with the combination of new elements, they match different styles to get this one. For example, The City Hall located at Plaza del ayuntamiento combines neo baroque, purist and mannerist style to catch modernist appearance. The building 7 and 8 located at Sorni st 23 and Felix Pizcueta st. contains, as the City Hall, historicist and medievalist character.

And how about the decoration of these buildings? It takes an important part of this style; this is based on nature and organic forms; some of the architects of this period such as Carlos Carbonell adopted sculptures and figures to represent the meaning of some of his buildings, as we can see at the City Hall, Jose Manuel Curtain use elements like pinnacles as we can see at the building 7, 8 and the dragon house, and other architects that represent the Valencian culture through ornamentation elements.

As a conclusion, modernism in Valencia is an amazing demonstration of the pass of this movement for Spain, the exposition of the works of many important architect that transmit their feeling through shapes and compositions of lines, in a very revolutionary style, that today are still a great taste of good architecture.
